Ahhh the sportsbook. Nothing warms the cockles of my heart than to think about placing a wager on my favorite teams. This is by far one of the most exciting ways to gamble in my opinion. The human drama of competition drives the excitement of having a wager riding on the outcome.

Seasons dictate which books are going to be running full and what the parameters of the wagering will be. Just like any other type of gaming, odds are of the utmost importance. Books get communicate with one another to dictate what the odds for any given game will be, most of these discussions involve consultants who have pertinent information that will affect games. Betting windows, televisions and odds boards are the common décor of Nevada sportsbooks and of course tons of people cheering their heads off.

Typically, there are two types of bets to be made, the money line bet and the point spread wager. Money line bets are straight forward, to win the wager all the team has to do is win the game. Point spread bets are a little more complicated.

This style of bet relies on an index set up by the book to determine how big the margin of victory needs be to pay out. Books make a “vigorish” think of this as a service charge. Money won is determined by score, depending on which sport you watch the odds can get very interesting. Remember in point spread betting you have to put up 11 bucks to win 10; this is the wager du jour of basketball and football. Money line bets are better on the return but definitely not the first option in wagering.

Books love the spread; it gives them more control over what parameters define a “winning” pick. Parlay bets are risky wagers. The gamer sets up multiple bets based on the point spread system looking for a big payday.

The caveat is that if he loses even one of his picks, he’s through. Just like any other wager, the more picks you make the bigger the risk and reward. Be careful with this one, there’s a big house advantage on this one over 80%. Total bets are another variation on the point spread. Gamers are wagering on the total points scored in the game, this is set up on an index held by the book.

Small house edge around 4% with the same risk 11 to win 10 vibe that makes the point spread such an enigma. Strategy here is straightforward, go with the underdog whether home or visiting, they have a better winning percentage and a lower losing percentage than the favorite.

The percentages break down even on visiting versus home. Remember that the house edge always favors the favorite. Only put down what you can afford to lose, keep an eye out for roster changes and injuries that can hurt your bottom line. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. Be safe, play conservatively, and as always, have fun!
