Mahjong is a game of skill for four players that originated in China. Mahjong involves skill, strategy, and calculation, as well as a certain degree of chance. Mahjong is very popular in Asia, and is slowly becoming popular in the USA in casinos.

To determine who the dealer is each player throws the dice and the player with the highest total when the scores are added becomes the dealer. The dealer's Wind is now East, the player to their right is South wind, the next player to the right has West and the last player is North.

The game wind changes every hand, unless the dealer wins. It changes after the Game Wind has rotated around the board, that is, after each player has had a turn at dealing and lost. Each player is dealt bewteen thirteen or sixteen tiles per hand. As each player gets a turn they draw a tile, and then discards one tile. The goal is in for the player is making four or five melds.

Sets traditionally consist of 144 cards or tiles as follows:

Three suits with tiles numbered 1 to 9. The usual English names for the suits are circles, bamboos and characters. There are four identical copies of each suit tile - 108 suit tiles in all.

The four directions or "winds" (east, north, west, south) - four copies of each (16 tiles)
Three colours or "dragons" (red, green, white) - again four copies of each, so 12 tiles.
Bonus tiles: four different "flower" tiles and four different "season" tiles - so 8 bonus tiles in all, though some sets may have more. Now depending on the which type of Mahjong is played,luck can be anything from a minor to a dominant factor in success.

There are numerous types of Mahong, it depends which country you are playing in as to what their rules are and how its played. Each variant of Mahjong may have the same type of scoring, but can be different in other aspects.

Mahjong Equipment

Mahjong can be played using either Mahjong tiles or Mahjong cards. Most people opt for playing cards when travling since it takes up less room, and it is much lighter than the tiles. Mahjong sets will also include, chips or bone tiles.

Sets might also include indicators denoting the dealer and the Prevailing Wind of the round. Some sets also may contian wooden racks to hold either the tiles or chips. Mahjong tiles are split into these categories: suits, honor and flowers.

Mahjong Scoring

Scoring in Mahjong involves points, with a monetary value for points agreed upon by players. In many variations there can be scoreless hands.

Ohter versions require some type of value of points. Points are obtained by matching the winning hand and the winning condition with a specific set of criteria, with different criteria scoring different values.
